The Central American country of Costa Rica is relatively new to cigar production when compared to its more famous Neighbours of Cuba and the Dominican Republic
Like Nicaragua, the soils in Costa Rica are rich and fertile which are perfect for growing tobacco that makes richly flavoured cigars. The cigars can be moderately full-bodied and spicy displaying a good intensity.
When one thinks of cigars, probably the first country that springs to mind is Cuba. Situated only 100 miles south off the tip of Florida, east of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Cuba is blessed with the perfect climate and soils for the growing and cultivation of tobacco.
It is also home to some of the world’s oldest and most famous cigar brands, such as the likes of Cohiba, Romeo Y Julieta and Montecristo to name but three.
The Dominican Republic is quite possibly one of the most beautiful countries in the world, famed for its beaches and amazing scenery, this has led to making it an extremely popular holiday destination.
The Dominican is also the world’s biggest exporter / producer of Cigars making it a must stop destination for cigar enthusiasts. If ever there was a country to go to where you can enjoy a restful break and discover new cigars, this would be it.
Central America is definitely one of the great areas of the world for growing tobacco – the near-perfect climate and the rich soils produce leaves that can be rich in colour and develop wonderful flavours once rolled into cigars.
Although Honduran cigars are maybe not quite as popular as their southern cousins from Nicaragua, they are equally as good in terms of the quality of tobacco and the build of the cigars. Over the last 20-30 years several big-name producers, have opened factories in Honduras. Slowly, but surely, Honduras is starting to step out of the shadows of their highly successful neighbour and show the world what they can do.
Home to some of the best tobacco growing areas in the world, the famed city San Andres Tuxtla in the Veracruz region was once the capital of Mexico’s tobacco production since the early 19th century.
The local area around the city was blessed with rich, volcanic soils which were ideal for growing tobacco, and especially the famed Negro San Andres, only grown in this region of the world. This tobacco, primarily used for wrapper leaves, is very highly sought after by many other cigar producers in the likes of Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic.
As recently as Twenty years ago, if you were asked to name a country that produced extremely high-quality premium cigars, you would have struggled to name one, other than Cuba.
After all, Cuba was the only major player in the field and was (and still is) a country with an instantly recognisable array of different brands that have been around, in some cases, for centuries. Life was simpler then!
Today, however, if you were asked the very same question, I am sure that your answer would be quite different as there are now several countries that are producing cigars that give the old guard a real run for their money. Perched at the top of this list would be the Central American Republic of Nicaragua.
