One of the most important things for the smoker, irrespective of whether it is for Cigars, pipes, or cigarettes, is a lighter. Lighters come in many different shapes and sizes with the primary function of getting the tobacco lit so the smoker can enjoy it. There are numerous types of lighter available to buy, but many are designed for specific purposes.

Cigar smokers will more than likely use a Jet Flame lighter (also called Torch Flame lighters) which burn Butane as their source of fuel.
Butane is almost tasteless so doesn’t adversely affect the flavour of the cigar. Usually, the ignition mechanism is an electronic spark to ignite the gas.
Most Jet Flame lighters are windproof, so will work in all manner of British weather conditions!
Many come with built in accessories such as cigar punches and / or cutters with some even being able to be used as cigar stands.
There are many different styles of Jet flame lighters, most have usually just the one or two flames, but some can have as many as 5. The more jets though, the more fuel is used.
Pipe lighters, though less common than the other two types of lighter, are incredibly important if you are a pipe smoker.
The main point of difference with a pipe lighter is that the flame often projects out the side of the lighter. This makes it is easier to point the flame downwards and draw the flame down towards the bowl when lighting the pipe.
Many pipe lighters come loaded with built in accessories such as tampers and pipe knives which negates the need to carry other excess equipment around.
All pipe lighters will be soft flame lighters as using jet flame lighters on a pipe is not recommended, as they can potentially damage or crack the pipe bowl due to the very rapid increase in heat.
Pipe lighters come in either petrol or butane gas variants – the petrol ones, such as the Zippo ones, are wind proof and will light in almost any weather conditions, the gas ones you would use in more clement conditions.
Zippo’s (and other brands of petrol lighter) are mainly used for cigarettes and occasionally pipes.
Designed to work in more adverse weather conditions, these windproof lighters burn petrol to create the flame.
Zippo lighters are quite possibly one of the world’s most recognisable brands. Founded back in 1932, they became incredibly popular during world war 2 among the American and allied forces as they would light almost anywhere. Featuring in countless films they have become iconic.
Although reliable and able to be lit almost anywhere, I would probably NOT recommend them for quality hand rolled cigars. This is because the fuel taint can affect the flavour of the product you are smoking. Why spend £20 – £30 on a cigar and have it taste of petrol?
Zippo’s come in all manner of designs, some are relatively basic, others incredibly detailed. Some are standard cases, some are armour cased. some are released as Limited Editions and can be highly collectable. Zippo’s come with a lifetime guarantee (technically it’s the hinge that is guarenteed) so you be assured in your purchase.
